The Lovin’ Spoonful

The Lovin’ Spoonful is a series of renderings that advertise the harmfulness of sugar through warning labels inspired by the tobacco industry.

The work uses digital art to reveal the prevalence of hidden sugars in perceived healthy choices we make daily.

In the early 1970s, health and consumer groups demanded that breakfast cereals carry warning labels for the amount of sugar it contains.

Industry operatives spent a fortune convincing regulators that the evidence is “inconclusive”, allowing sugar laden products to thrive even within perceived “healthy” products.

In 2012, an estimate of 1.5 million deaths were directly caused by diabetes. The World Health Organisation projects that diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of death in 2030.
